Jason Steel Talks About Hollie

Jason Steel, Hollie’s dad, has been talking to HollieSteel.org.uk about Hollie and his hopes for her future.

“I’m sure Hollie will do the rest of her life justice,” he said. “We will make sure she keeps her feet on the ground.

“It’s probably a good thing that she is 90% confident and 10% self critical, she should keep level headed always because of that. She lives and breathes singing and dancing, so she is 90% of the way to becoming a success. More hard work and determination should see her through.”

Plus Jason has confided that he has been working on a musical, which whilst progressing will still take a while for him to complete.  Perhaps Hollie Steel and her brother Joshua will one day star in their dad’s musical, making it a truly family affair.

I sympathize with Jason and Nina Steel. How do they raise two children with prodigious talent and the single-minded determination to succeed? It would seem that the normal guide book for parenting won’t do. I think they are doing best. Give them a normal upbringing for as long as possible whilst supporting their dreams. In Hollie’s case, that amounted to just 10 years.

I worry a bit about Hollie’s announced wish on BGT for “everybody to know me”. Fame can exact a heavy price with its concomitant intrusions into one’s privacy and cruel, uncaring criticisms. This is especially true when it happens at a vulnerable age. I realize children live in the present and it is difficult to convince them that patience can bring even greater rewards but I hope Hollie does not insist in rushing into a hothouse career. What I would wish to happen is that she record a cd now as a document of her abilities at this age but then attend some prestigious art school like RADA that can nurture and develop her talent to the fullest extent. When she is ready, she can then blossom into the best Elphaba ever.

My admiration to Jason. Although he has to look after two beautiful girls and a boy He still has enough free time to write a musical. Once as a kid I was a prospective musician and I clearly remember the amount of time my Mom & Dad spent on raising me up and putting me on the right “musical” track (later I gave up music in favor of civil engineering). Therefore, I perfectly appreciate Jason & Nina efforts in supporting Joshua & Hollie and wish them good health, not to lose their jobs during this terrible recession and much of luck.

As far as Hollie goes, I echo what Mick Uhl said above. At 10/11 she has already sung in (what I think are) some of the major music theatres in Britain and has received admiration from all over the world. It seems that it’s a child’s play for her to sing that beautifully.
