Hollie Steel Chat Update

hollie steel laughing rosesHollie Steel was in the chat room again yesterday and she shared some exciting news with us.

Hollie is going to be in a TV advert that will be screened on ITV in the Granada region. Wow! That should give her debut album some much needed publicity and everyone will start to sit up and take notice of our little star. I’m hopeful that I will be able to obtain a copy of the advert to put it on the website so that everyone can see it.

Hollie is also going to be doing an interview on Smooth Radio, a radio station based in London. However, Smooth Radio can be listened to online so hopefully we will all get the chance to hear the interview.

Hollie also shared some photos with us. The first (on the left) is one of the one’s taken during the photo session for Hollie’s album. Hollie said that she couldn’t stop laughing because rose petals were being thrown over her.

Hollie – with your voice you don’t need to be able to play the electric guitar!

    Well done Hollie.
Loved the photos .Still keeping up with all your news from the other side of the world.
We are in our very busy season with the vineyard at present but I always find time to check on your progress and play your songs through from You Tube and your site.
    All the best < Sharon

    Hi again,

I listened to the samples of the raw recordings of Hollie’s CD which I found on her mySpace page. My impression, and I have to turn the volume down as my 8-month-old niece is sleeping in the other room, is that her singing is better than what I expect from a 11 year old, and I compare her to the level displayed by the students of our national school of music back in the 1980s when I was 11 – and the then-standard was high.

Firstly, there is not a single flat note, there is a feeling for dynamics and expression. Particularly, the samples of ‘I could have danced all night’ and ‘Edelweiss’ show amazing expressiveness. (BTW, Whoever plays the piano on ‘Edelweiss’ does an amazing job. They should record more duets like this)

I repeat what I have written about Hollie on my website – that only the timbre of her voice reveals that it’s a kid singing. I hope one day when she grows up she will record the same songs again.

Usually, I am not a fan of recordings done by kids (unless it’s child’s songs) because of the obvious immaturity of their renditions. Indeed, some of the songs in the song-list look too ambitious for a 11 year old (mainly those written by Giacomo Puccini and A.L.Webber). At the very least, 9 pounds for a nice A4 picture of Hollie with a bonus – free CD – does not look like a bad deal, does it? My pictures from Bournemouth lack a good portrait of her.

    Hi again,

To explain what I thought in the last paragraph of my previous post I’ll post what I think are the best renditions I am aware of of some of the songs on Hollie’s CD.

O Mio Babbino Caro by Montserrat Caballe http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PomIF3s2-OY

Nessun Dorma by Luciano Pavarotti http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0Sx5lbVlQA

The Music Of The Night by Michael Crawford http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n5dhyiqhR7Y

Wishing You Were Somewhere Here Again by Hollie Steel, BGT 2009 final http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cqxzWBV1qc4

Of course, no-one expects 11-year-old Hollie to give as polished rendition as 71-year-old Monsterrat Caballe but I think her attempt at the song is quite remarkable, especially knowing she had been singing Italian songs for less than a year before recording the song. Certainly, there might be some issues with Hollie’s accent when singing in Italian or Latin but I judge her on her musical performance and not on her pronunciation.

I think this CD is going to be Hollie’s successful second step into the world of music. If she wins and becomes an established singer/performer we will win, too, because she will entertain us for years to come. And she is definitely a good entertainer – you see Hollie has successfully kept my interest in her art for nearly a year now and I am a person who is known for his highly demanding taste :)

Just a curious fact. The rate of the tickets to Montserrat Caballe’s concert in Munich on April 22nd is 250 euros. You get an impression what a classy singer I am talking about, don’t you. Some day Hollie’s concerts will be as expensive, too, but I hope it will happen long before she is 71 because otherwise I’ll be 91 and it will be a little difficult for me to move around Europe to see her.
